Pregnancy is filled with anticipation. As the day of delivery approaches, parents may wonder: Will my baby be okay? Will the delivery go smoothly? Will I have the strength I need?
For parents of faith, prayer can provide a quiet place to express hope, fear, gratitude, and trust in God. Prayer does not replace prenatal care or medical attention, but it can be part of the emotional and spiritual preparation for birth.
A Prayer for a Safe Delivery
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the precious life growing within me. Thank You for carrying my baby and me through this pregnancy and bringing us closer to the day we will finally meet.
As I prepare for labor and delivery, please calm my heart and replace my fear with peace.
Lord, protect my baby throughout labor and birth. Keep my baby safe, strong, and healthy.
Protect me also. Give my body strength and help me through every stage of labor. When I become tired, give me endurance. When I become afraid, remind me that I am not alone.
Give wisdom, patience, and clear judgment to the doctors, nurses, midwives, and everyone caring for us. Guide their decisions and help them recognize quickly if either my baby or I need additional care.
I pray for a safe delivery and a healthy baby. Whether the birth happens exactly as I have planned or takes an unexpected direction, give me peace and courage for each moment.
Let our first meeting be filled with gratitude, love, and joy.
Thank You for this child. Boy or girl, this baby is already deeply loved.
Amen.
A Short Prayer During Labor
During labor, a long prayer may be difficult. A mother can simply pray:
A Prayer for the Baby
A Prayer for the Medical Team
The people caring for mother and baby also carry an important responsibility.
When the Birth Plan Changes
Many mothers carefully imagine how they want their babies to be born. Sometimes labor follows that plan, and sometimes circumstances change.
A longer labor, induction, assisted delivery, cesarean birth, or unexpected medical intervention does not make the birth less meaningful.
Accepting appropriate medical help when circumstances change is not a lack of faith. Prayer and good medical care can exist side by side.
Preparing Spiritually for Delivery
In the final weeks of pregnancy, consider creating a small routine that helps you feel peaceful. You might pray before bed, read an encouraging Bible passage, listen to calming worship music, or ask family and friends to pray for you.
You can also write your favorite short prayer somewhere accessible so that you or your support person can read it during labor.
Alongside spiritual preparation, continue attending prenatal appointments and discussing your birth plan, concerns, warning signs, medications, and delivery questions with your healthcare team.

Your Choice, God’s Blessing
Planning for a child can involve hopes, preparation, questions, and dreams. But throughout the journey—from trying to conceive to pregnancy and finally delivery—there is also room for faith, gratitude, and trust.
May every expectant mother reading this be surrounded by good care, support, peace, and love as she prepares to welcome her baby.
